Marine Radar Goes High-Tech

When boating in the dark or through foggy conditions, marine radar can mean the difference between a safe journey and a dangerous collision. By alerting you to potential hazards well in advance, radar systems keep you safer and more informed out on the water. Because the technology used in marine radar continues to become more powerful and refined, now might be a good time to consider upgrading your equipment. With the invention of solid-state radar antenna technology, the capabilities of magnetron-based radar antennas pale in comparison. Learn more about how marine radar is becoming more effective and efficient than ever in this week’s blog.

Marine radar has come a long way.

Efficiency

Traditional magnetron-based radar antennas not only consume vast amounts of energy, but they often take up to 2 minutes to boot up. Solid-state radar antennas offer a much more efficient alternative in terms of both time and money. These systems last much longer than their older counterparts and can be ready to go in as little as 10 seconds, which means your radar will begin picking up signals almost instantly.

High definition

Solid-state radar antennas use pulse compression to transmit a pulse over a range of frequencies. The technology then processes the strength of returned frequencies to determine target size and space between targets, offering a more precise interpretation than magnetron-based radar antennas are able to accomplish. You can also sharpen beam width in order to increase the definition of your targets.

Short- and long-range detection

Many solid-state radars are able to offer you the best of both worlds by providing clearly defined targets as close as 20 feet as well as reliable long-range detection. Some models can accurately detect targets with a range of up to 72 miles.
